As some of you may know, the very first project we started at Breakfast Second was our Middle Earth Aesthetics (MEA) series. This project is a collection of aesthetic Instagram accounts based on modern day versions of characters from The Hobbit. Our goal with the accounts is to pay homage to the characters’ book-inspired interests, as well as show what the characters would be like in the modern world. We also wanted to give you a glimpse of what the characters were doing prior to the events of The Hobbit. We’ve made several changes to the characters such as switching genders, updating ages, and adjusting relationships so that the characters truly fit in the modern-day world.
School and work have prevented us from fully exploring these accounts thus far, but we’re hoping that this summer we’ll have more time to take pictures and expand the fictional world we’ve created for our characters.
In the meantime, we wanted to introduce some of our characters and show off a bit of our aesthetic work!
First up: Billie Baggins.
What would a female, modern-day Bilbo Baggins be like? To be honest, quite similar to the book (and movies!) Bilbo Baggins you already know and love. She would be rather fond of tea, nature, and every hobbit’s favorite meal of the day: second breakfast!
She’d also love spending time with her young nephew, Freddie Baggins.
While some of Billie’s interests are our own ideas (based on our knowledge of Bilbo’s personality), we also took many interests and hobbies straight out of the pages of The Hobbit:
[Bilbo] loved maps, and in his hall there hung a large one of the Country Round with all his favourite walks marked on it in red ink.
We gave her a love for books, maps, journaling, and, of course, flowers.
You will notice already that Mr. Baggins was not quite so prosy as he liked to believe, also that he was very fond of flowers.
